  • Growing Degree Days (GDD) are a measure of accumulated heat throughout the growing season which is one of the key metrics influencing yield. GDD are calculated by determining the mean daily temperature and subtracting it from the base temperature needed for growth of the organism.
  • Night time minimum temperature for the critical mid-July through mid-August period compared to last 5 years. Studies have shown that relatively high night time temperatures (greater 66 °F) after pollination can reduced yield by between 5-13 percent.
  • Water availability is another key factor influencing yield. In general, average corn water use will increase from about 0.03 inches per day after emergence to over 0.27 inches per day during ear formation.
  • Vegetative Vigor: The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) has been in use for many years to measure and monitor plant growth (vigor) and vegetation cover. This metric allows the user to benchmark the intensity/volume of vegetation on the fields at any point during the current growing season to the same time in earlier years.
  • The acreage prediction routine is based on proprietary routines to access, quality-control, and process in-season NDVI imagery for benchmarking against a 10 year historic database.

  • The Aflatoxin Index is measure for increased contamination risk based on the following regional indicators: high daytime temperatures, high night time temperatures, high soil temperatures.

LandViewer

applies advanced geospatial technologies to help the agricultural community assess land use and crop progress.

UIC LandViewer was developed by Steffen Mueller and Ken Copenhaver at the University of Illinois at Chicago Energy Resources Center. Some of LandViewer's capabilities are summarized in the following article: LandViewer Feedstuffs
